Wahhooo!!!Sidney Crosby scored the overtime goal assisted by Jerome Mackinlah (I know I spelt that wrong, but it’s a challenging name and Don’s not here to help me) and I couldn’t be happier! Thank goodness. I was so scared because Ryan Smith (the US goalie) has been playing like a possessed maniac throughout the whole Olympics. Like making these impossible saves and shutting entire teams out. I mean think about it, he only let in 6 goals total in all the games the US played coming into this game. It didn’t matter how many pucks were whizzing at him, he was catching them, blocking them, left center and right. I’m VERY relieved! Going to an Olympic gold metal hockey game has been on my husband’s Things To Do Before I Die list, and what better outcome could there be to not only getting that wish fulfilled, but in such a spectacular fashion? He called once he got out of the game and was out on the street. Whoops and hollers all around him. “We won!“ he said. “I know,“ I replied, rather jauntily, now that the team was out of danger. “I watched the whole damn game!“ He laughed like I had just done something very clever, and it made me feel good. However, I hope he’s not getting any fancy ideas, like thinking of cajoling me into attending hockey games with him on a regular basis, because it’s not going to happen. My heart couldn’t take it. Too scary. Especially super important games like this one. Everyone was so happy. Watching when Sidney scored that goal, all across Canada, ridiculously large crowds of Canadians clad in red and white surging to their feet, arms shooting into the air, crazy madman dances. Mike Babcock, the coach, discreetly wiping away a few tears. Have to admit, I got a little damp eyed myself. So happy for my husband and the team and the cheering crowds. Proud for the US team as well, because it was a very close game. They could have won as easily as Team Canada did. Both teams played hard and fought hard, and didn’t give up. Both teams should be real proud and I bet all their mothers are too! Posted by Meg Tilly on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in |
