After I wrote my blog this morning, I went into the kitchen and made Breakfast Mash. (It’s an invention of mine and is one of my favorite breakfasts) I can only make it on weekends and Pro-D days (no school) because it has several steps and takes a while to cook. (I’ll post the recipe sometime soon.) Anyway, Will came down to breakfast, “Um, smells good!“ Which is always something a mother likes to hear.
We sat down around the table and Will said, “I was wondering if I could practice driving and then get a haircut and go by the video store?“
“Sure,“ I said, trying to act casual, but my heart is singing. My son wants to spend time with me! “That would be great. First I have to bring a tray down to ____ and then we can go.“
After we eat, I fly around the kitchen making sugar-free hot chocolate, an English muffin to go with the Breakfast Mash. I bring it down stairs. He doesn’t like it. It’s funny, he’s trying to pretend it’s okay, but when he takes a little bite, his mouth screws up like he’s nibbling on a chewy, squirming slug.
“You don’t like it?“ I say.
“Um…“ he pauses, face wrinkled in consternation. “It’s… um…“
“It’s made up of everything you like. Eggs, potatoes, bacon, Parmesan and cheddar cheese, rosemary, spices. It’s good. It’s one of my favorite breakfasts ever.“
“But it’s all mixed up…“
“Yeah, that’s why I call it Breakfast Mash.“
“It’s too complex, “ he says. He pauses, then continues manfully, “But if it’s important to you, I’ll eat it.“
“Nah, that’s okay. Would you rather have your plain yogurt and all bran?“
“Yes, please,“ he says happily, handing me the delicious plate of Breakfast Mash back.
I couldn’t help but laugh as I spooned up the gloop that he likes to eat.
And then I handing the baton over to Don and Will and I went out into the rainy foggy day. We had a real nice time. 3 1/2 hours, driving, chatting, doing errands. A lovely day. I don’t even care that I didn’t get my morning writing done. Some things are more important. Anyway, there is always tonight, or I can do double time tomorrow.
